Pālāʻau Power Plant, Molokai — a landmark project in Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fast-frequency response
Legacy batteries responded to grid changes in 300–500 milliseconds — far too slow for Molokai's tiny grid, where diesel generators couldn't spin up fast enough to compensate.
The 2 MW / 397 kWh BESS was tuned to act as a virtual flywheel, delivering near-instantaneous power whenever a large industrial load switched on or a cloud shadowed the solar array — preventing diesel generator trips before they could cascade.
The project gained international recognition in the engineering world for an unexpected discovery: the battery was too fast.
In 2020, researchers found that the BESS and the diesel generators' governors were "fighting" each other — creating power oscillations that destabilized the very grid the system was designed to protect.
This project demonstrates that in critical power engineering, speed alone is not sufficient — system-level coexistence between fast-response storage and traditional generation must be engineered and validated with equal rigor.
